The Pilates Method is a system of physical fitness designed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. Pilates was a true pioneer in the field of complete body fitness. The exercises emphasize controlled movement with correct form and engage the mind as well as the body.
Some of the benefits of Pilates include;
-Longer, leaner muscles
-Improved coordination and balance
-Increased flexibility and strength
-Better posture
-Increased circulation
-An overall feeling of physical and mental well-being.
Core Strength is the foundation of the Pilates Method. The basic idea is to strengthen the core muscles –deep abdominals, gluteals and back. If this “powerhouse” is strong, then the rest of the body is supported and free to move fully and gracefully without unnecessary tension. Classical Pilates incorporates memory, concentration, breath, precision and control. Body and mind are conditioned together.
To sum it up, Classical Pilates is strength, stretch and control.
At Westport Pilates, we teach in the style of Romana’s Pilates. Romana Kryzanowska was a world renowned protege of Mr. Pilates. After his death, he was chosen by Pilates wife Clara to take over at the studio. Romana went on to create her own method of teaching the work while keeping the integrity and essence of Joseph Pilates’ Contrology method, as it was known before his death. There is a system, one must begin with the basics building a foundation before progressing to Intermediate and Advanced.
